STATEMENT ON SOME FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS OF CHILDREN IN THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

HEALTH

In the DRC, a child’s right to health is seriously threatened from birth, as a result of a failing and weak health system.

This situation is strongly linked to extreme poverty levels (European Commission, 2018).

According to a 2020 UNICEF report, several ongoing epidemics kill thousands of children in DRC each year as the health system is unable to effectively manage deadly health crises. This is the case with measles, cholera, and malaria.

Unsanitary conditions, lack of access to drinking water, etc. are all triggering and sustaining factors of these numerous epidemics.

EDUCATION

Nearly 7 million children aged 5 to 17 do not have access to education with a percentage of girls of 54.7% according to a recent UNICEF report.

Several are the contributing factors, namely: Armed conflicts, poverty with strong social inequalities, the unequal distribution of educational institutions and infrastructure in the country, poor health, certain barriers and socio-cultural vulnerabilities such as child labor, child marriage etc.

NUTRITION

Malnutrition is a real public health problem in the DRC with nearly 46% of children suffering from stunted growth with serious consequences for their development.

Particular attention is paid to children in conflict zones, refugees and displaced persons, who are highly exposed to poor nutrition, various infections as well as psycho-social instability.

THE WITHOUT SHELTER

Trafficking in street children, many are victims of societal abuses, political instability as well as armed conflicts which are the main causes of poverty in the DRC.

In 2011, Kinshasa, capital of the DRC, had nearly 30,000 homeless children under the age of 18, with an increasing number of girls.

(Humanium, May 2020).

They are thus at the mercy of all comers.

The so-called “street” children are not protected, do not have access to food, education, shelter, and other basic necessities.

They are therefore vulnerable to abuse and exploitation: Child labor, Prostitution, rape etc.
